GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier vs. Training Weight Vest for Rucking

If you’re not going to use a GORUCK Rucker for rucking, there are two prominent options from GORUCK that could also work. The GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier (RPC) and the GORUCK training Weight Vest are the two most common options and each offer distinct features tailored to different workout needs. I own both of them and here are some thoughts on the two.

GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier (RPC)

Design and Functionality

The GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier is engineered primarily for rucking. Its minimalist design ensures that the weight is positioned high and close to the back. The carrier is compatible with GORUCK’s Ruck Plates both short and long.

Key Features

  • Compatibility: Designed to securely hold 10LB, 20LB, and 30LB Standard Ruck Plates or there is a version that supports 30/45 # ruck plates.
  • Streamlined Design: Minimalist build with no unnecessary straps or padding, ensuring zero bulk.
  • Durable Construction: Made from 1000D Cordura, known for its ruggedness and longevity, it also has 210HT Cordura on the back and shoulder straps to reduce friction on your cloths.

User Experiences

I have done some rucking with the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier and it works just fine. It is small, streamlined, and easy to toss on and go. No added frills, just weight and go. I’ve done some PT with it as well, and it performs just fine. There’s nothing fancy here. Just a way to carry weight. The biggest downside is no way to store anything… like water.

GORUCK Training Weight Vest

Design and Functionality

The GORUCK training Weight Vest offers a traditional weighted vest experience. It distributes weight evenly across the torso, making it suitable for a variety of workouts, including CrossFit routines, bodyweight exercises, and rucking. The vest is compatible with standard GORUCK Ruck Plates and Rogue Training Vest Weight Plates. While I do not use this for rucking, personally, I frequently use it for CrossFit and can say with confidence that this is the best weight vest out there.

Key Features

  • Versatile Compatibility: Accommodates Standard Ruck Plates, as well as Rogue Training Vest Weight Plates.
  • Optimized Weight Distribution: Ensures even weight spread across the torso, enhancing comfort during dynamic movements.
  • Enhanced Mobility: Designed for a wide range of exercises, including running, jumping, and high-intensity circuits.
  • Comfort Features: Includes high-quality padding to reduce pressure points and improve overall comfort.

User Experiences

I regularly use The GORUCK training Weight Vest for CrossFit and love it. Hands down the most comfortable one on the market. If you’re looking to add weight to your walks, this is a solid solution. The bonus is the ability to use it for other types of workouts is a bonus. The downside, like the RPC, is there is no storage.

Key Considerations

Weight Distribution and Comfort

The GORUCK training Weight Vest design ensures even weight distribution across the torso, which is beneficial for dynamic movements and high-intensity workouts. This balanced load can reduce localized strain and enhance overall comfort during exercises like running, jumping, and bodyweight circuits. In contrast, the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier weight positioning is more centralized on the upper back, which is ideal for rucking but may not offer the same level of comfort for varied movements.

Versatility

If your fitness routine includes a mix of rucking and other high-intensity workouts, the Training Weight Vest’s adaptability makes it a suitable choice. The GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier, while excellent for rucking, may have limitations in dynamic training scenarios due to its design.

Durability

Both the RPC and the GORUCK training Weight Vest are constructed with GORUCK’s renowned durability, featuring robust materials designed to withstand rigorous use.

Conclusion

Choosing between the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier and the GORUCK training Weight Vest depends on your specific training goals and preferences. If your primary focus is rucking, the RPC offers a specialized design that enhances performance during long-distance weighted walks. However, if you engage in a diverse range of workouts, including CrossFit-style exercises and rucking, the Training Weight Vest provides greater versatility and comfort. Personally, if rucking, I go for the Rucker. But, I love the vest and the RPC is a great piece of specialized gear.
