First Look Review: GORUCK x Carryology “Berserker” GR1

Typically, I’ll get a new ruck, live with it for a bit, and then post a full review. But this time, I couldn’t wait. We’ve got a very special ruck on the table—the third collab between GORUCK and Carryology—and I wanted to share my unboxing and first impressions right out of the gate.

Introducing: the GORUCK x Carryology Berserker GR1.

Video First Look and Review

The Third in a Legendary Series

If you’ve followed the previous GORUCK X Carryology releases, you’ll remember the Guerrilla X and the Samurai—each with its own style, story, and fanbase. Now, we get the Berserker, and right out of the plastic, it’s clear this one means business.

From the patch to the zippers to the leather—this thing is dripping with detail.

First Impressions: What Stands Out?

Let’s hit the highlights:

The Patch

The forged axe head patch is just plain awesome. It’s bold, heavy, and instantly sets the tone. GORUCK and Carryology always crush it with their patches, and this one is no exception.

Zipper Pulls & Teeth

The industrial-style zipper pulls are clean, minimal, and very different from your standard GORUCK pulls. Paired with the giant zipper teeth, everything about the zip experience screams rugged and premium.

Leather & Build

This ruck is wrapped in supple, full-grain leather—soft to the touch but substantial in hand. It’s going to wear beautifully over time, taking on character like a Heritage ruck.

Clean Aesthetic

This is a slick ruck—no MOLLE on the front—and has a very professional, refined look. You could easily rock this at the office without looking like you’re on your way to jump out of a helicopter.

Functional Features

Even with the high-end materials and design touches, this is still a functional GR1 at heart.

  • 21L capacity in the classic GR1 layout
  • Quick access pocket in back (lined with blue)
  • Laptop compartment with traditional frame sheet
  • Internal MOLLE and standard mesh/stash pockets
  • Blue Nordic print interior lining
  • Unique zipper pull materials (some even inspired by Nordic rope or ship twine)

It’s worth noting: this thing stands on its own. Literally. Only the second ruck I’ve ever had do that right out of the box. That says something about the structure and quality.

A Few Quick Observations

  • Shoulder straps and back panel are 210D Cordura—not leather. Likely a weight and durability decision.
  • The handle is leather on top, 210D underneath.
  • Weight is lighter than I expected for a leather GR1.
  • Metal buckles for the shoulder strap adjustment are chunky and industrial-looking. A nice departure from standard plastic hardware.
  • Some concern about the patch staying secure—might just need a better stick.

Final Thoughts

The Berserker GR1 is a high-end, beautifully executed collaboration. The attention to detail is obvious, even without diving into the full Carryology spec sheet (which I highly recommend checking out).

If you’re after a functional ruck with a premium aesthetic, this one delivers. Whether you’re pairing it with jeans or a blazer, the Berserker holds its own.

Yes, the price is steep (we’re talking $700+ territory), but if you’re the kind of rucker who appreciates craftsmanship, design, and rarity—this one is worth a look.

What’s Next?

I’ll be putting this ruck through its paces and sharing a full review down the road. Until then:
