2022 is the second year of GORUCK Tribe. The overarching theme for this year is “Life Has Risks.”

Ruck 1 Mile Every Day.

Additional Task:
Write down something positive that you want to do this year, and what you need to do to be ready. As opposed to cutting things out that you think of as negative, add a goal to your life that is positive. It works better.

1 Miler, 2 Miler, 3 Miler, 4 Miler, 5 Miler – ALL TIMED at baseline weight for you, or 45/30 (heavy). At least 2 full days rest between each one. See how you do.

Additional Tasking
Courage is contagious. Reach out to at least 2 people and tell them why you believe they are courageous. Then do something that tests your courage, physically or mentally.

Breath – The New Science of a Lost Art – James Nestor


For this month’s Rucking challenge we will go heavier with #45/#30 or, if that’s too much, scale it back to #30/#20 or slick (no weight).

  • 3x 1 mile “Apache” rucks. Hold a mouth full of water and breathe only through your nose. Time each 1-mile ruck to measure your progress. If you swallow the water, start the ruck over or treat yourself to 1,000 burpees.
  • Ruck 1x 12 miler for time.

Workout of the month
6 Rounds

  • 400m Ruck
  • 7 “Double Push Up” Get Ups with Ruck On

Hold Water in your mouth throughout the entire workout like Apache Run.


Lori Piestewa was the first Native American woman KIA. Ambushed in the attack where Jessica Lynch was taken POW. Her surname is derived from a Hopi language root meaning “water pooled on the desert by a hard rain”; thus, Piestewa (Hopi: [piˈɛstɛwa]) translates loosely as “the people who live by the water.”

Additional Tasking
Dedicate 5 minutes a day to a breathing practice/meditative/box breathing technique.

Book of the month
A Good Man Is Hard To Find – Flannery O’Connor


2 x 5 milers (timed) at baseline weight (usually 20/30#)

  • 5 miler
  • 5 miler retest

Either as standalone or combined with 5 milers above, ruck 2+ miles in the vicinity of a local cemetery. No noise, only respect.

1 Mile Ruck
100 Pull-Ups
200 Push-Ups
300 Squats
1 Mile Ruck
All with (20/14lb)

Modification: Bent over sandbag rows (60/40) are a substitute for pull-ups.

Additional Tasking
Visit a grave and make an offering.

​Consider visiting a veteran’s grave as part of the UWVC Memorial Day #LestWeForget Ruck (special patch details forthcoming). Say their name so they are not forgotten. Render a salute or place your hand over your heart in a moment of silence. If you feel compelled to do more, placing a small American flag would be an appropriate tribute in honor of their service to our country.

Additional Tasking

The First Amendment of the US Constitution grants the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. This is a form of revolt.

Find a cause that you feel strongly about and petition the Government to make a change by writing a letter, signing a petition, or protesting peacefully.

Think about an area of your life where you are not at peace. Perhaps it’s with a relationship, your career, your fitness, or another aspect of your life. Write down three ways to attempt to obtain peace and put it on your bathroom mirror.

The numbers are significant — 343 New York City Fire Department first responders died at Ground Zero that day trying to climb the 110 flights of stairs to save people during an unimaginable event!

Pick 4 days out of this month to Ruck one mile with heavy weight “Mog Mile” style — in honor of those who did the October 4, 1993 Mog Mile, and those who could not.

Start with your baseline weight (45/30/20 recommended) and increase 5-20# for each of the 4 rucks, up to 100# if you are an advanced rucker.

There are a lot of ways to feel alive, but there are not many as simple and rejuvenating as seeing the sun rise. One day this month, set your alarm clock and wake up to catch the sun coming up. Take a picture and post it if that’s your thing but then put your phone away and live in the moment.

  • Slick // No rucksack. You pick the height of the step-ups.
  • Standard // 30#/20# rucksack. You pick the height of the step-ups.
  • Expert // 45# rucksack. Use 20″ box for step-ups.

Additional Tasking
In the spirit of reaching out and connecting with another human being, invite a buddy to ruck alongside you. If you can’t arrange to go rucking with someone personally, then set up a call and catch up while rucking.
